Omiš Beaches: Sand in Town or Pebbles on the Riviera?
Updated October 26, 2026 · 5 min read
Choose Velika plaža for the easiest family beach day, and Brzet when shade and pebbles matter more than sand. Omiš is unusual on this stretch of Dalmatia because the Cetina has created broad sandy beaches around the river mouth, while the Riviera south of town quickly changes to pebble coves.
Velika plaža: shallow and central
The town’s main beach lies within walking distance of the old centre. Omiš Tourist Board says you can swim 100–200 metres from shore and still touch the bottom, and calls the beach ideal for children. That makes it forgiving for paddling and play, but it is not a guarantee of safety: children still need close supervision, and depth and currents can vary near a river mouth.
This is the practical choice when a group wants cafés, beach activities and no transfer. Kayak, boat and paddle-boat rentals are advertised around the beach. The drawback is predictable: the convenient beach is also the busy one in summer, with little sense of a hidden Adriatic cove.
Camp Almissa: the other sandy option
The beach by Camp Almissa is the other sandy beach named by the tourist board in Omiš. It is popular with families and has organised activities nearby. Choose it when facilities matter more than solitude. Access rules and services can change with the campsite, so check locally if you are not staying there.
Brzet: pebbles and pine shade
Brzet begins about a 15-minute walk from the old town. Its pebble sections and pine trees feel more characteristically Dalmatian than the sandy river mouth. The best shaded spots fill early, so this is a beach for an earlier start rather than a late search for an empty tree.
Pebbles make water shoes useful for many visitors. They also mean the water may deepen differently from Velika plaža. Do not transfer the “shallow for 100–200 metres” description from the town beach to every cove on the Riviera.
Beyond town: choose access before beauty
Nemira, Stanići, Lokva Rogoznica, Medići, Marušići and Pisak offer smaller beaches and coves. Lokva Rogoznica sits just below the D8 road, and the final descent, parking and return climb can matter more than the distance on a map. A secluded-looking cove is not automatically suitable for a pushchair or limited mobility.
If your aim is to see the coast from the water, a short kayak outing can complement rather than replace a beach day. The Cetina kayak rental for two costs €23 per person, but it follows the river and should not be presented as a Riviera beach transfer.
Our recommendation
Start at Velika plaža with young children or without transport. Walk to Brzet for pebbles and pine shade. Choose a Riviera cove only after checking its steps, parking and shade; the quieter option is worthwhile only when everyone in the group can reach it comfortably.
