Mirabela and Fortica in Omiš: Which Fortress Should You Climb?
Updated October 26, 2026 · 4 min read
Visit Mirabela if you have an hour; choose Fortica when the climb itself is part of the day. Mirabela rises directly above Omiš old town and the local tourist board describes it as a five-minute uphill walk from the central square, reached by stairs beside St Michael’s Church. Fortica, also called Starigrad, stands much higher on the Omiška Dinara ridge and requires proper footwear, water and more time.
Mirabela: the compact choice
Mirabela is the pirate fortress woven into the old town. Its advantage is efficiency: narrow streets, stone steps and the viewpoint fit naturally into a walk through central Omiš. The view takes in the roofs, Cetina mouth and Brač beyond the coast.
A small entrance fee is charged, according to the Omiš tourist board, but current opening times and admission are not stated in the tour data. Check locally rather than planning around an old figure. The stairs and tight historic structure also mean visitors with limited mobility should not assume easy access.
Sunset is the classic time, but it concentrates visitors on a confined viewpoint. Go earlier if you value space more than golden light. After rain, polished stone steps deserve particular care.
Fortica: the mountain option
Fortica rewards the effort with a wider view over Omiš, the river canyon, coast and islands. It is not simply “the other fortress” a few streets away. The climb is exposed to sun and the route is longer, so an early start makes more sense in hot weather. The tourist board specifically advises proper footwear and enough water for the sunrise visit.
There is also a three-hour guided via ferrata at Fortica from €28. It has 4.7 stars from 141 reviews and uses specialist equipment to reach a ridge section that is otherwise inaccessible. That activity is not the normal walking route to the fortress. Book it only if you want a protected climbing experience rather than a sightseeing hike.
Can you do both in one day?
Yes, but separating them is more pleasant. Mirabela pairs with the old town and riverfront. Fortica belongs to a cooler morning, with the afternoon left for the beach or a Cetina river boat trip. Trying to climb Fortica in the strongest heat merely to tick both boxes is a poor trade.
Neither fortress should be described as fully accessible without confirmation. Mirabela has stairs; Fortica is a mountain objective. If mobility is restricted, enjoy the exterior and the lower-town views and ask the tourist office about the current access arrangement.
Our recommendation
Most short-stay visitors should begin with Mirabela because it delivers a strong view with little detour. Choose Fortica for the bigger landscape and a genuine hike. If standard hiking sounds too tame, the guided Fortica via ferrata is the relevant bookable experience, not a shortcut to the summit.
