Kayak and SUP in Omiš: River or Sea?
Updated October 26, 2026 · 5 min read
Beginners should start on the Cetina rather than treating a sea paddle as the default. The Cetina River kayak rental for two costs €23 per person. Its description says the kayak can take two adults and a child and suggests a route of up to 6 km each way, roughly 1.5–2 hours in each direction. That is a maximum outline, not a sensible target for every paddler.
Cetina: calmer scenery, but still a return journey
The river route trades open-sea views for steep canyon walls and generally more sheltered water. It works well when you want to set your own pace and turn around as soon as arms or attention fade. Remember that every kilometre upstream or into the canyon has to be paddled back; do not use the operator’s longest route as a challenge.
Ask at collection about current, wind, the permitted area and the latest return time. The listing gives operating hours, but conditions and daylight matter more than a printed closing time. A life jacket should be fitted to each participant; confirm child sizing before booking rather than assuming one will be available.
Sea kayak and SUP at Velika plaža
Omiš Tourist Board lists kayak and boat rental among the activities at Velika plaža. The sandy town beach is convenient, but the river mouth is a transition between fresh water and the Adriatic. Wind, boat traffic and swell can make a short outing feel quite different from a sheltered river paddle.
A stand-up paddleboard is pleasant in flat water and awkward when wind pushes from the side. If the board keeps drifting before you have left the shallows, that is useful information: stay close or switch plans. Never infer safety from other people being on the water. Ask the rental operator where you may go and check the return conditions.
Which option suits whom?
Choose the Cetina rental for scenery, a flexible turnaround and a first independent paddle. Choose a beach rental for a brief session near town when the sea is genuinely calm. A guided trip is the better choice if nobody can steer confidently, if you do not understand the local conditions or if your group needs help with technique.
With a child, the decisive questions are not the advertised capacity but the operator’s minimum age, the correct life jacket and whether the child can sit safely for the planned time. Those limits are not stated in the local summary, so confirm them on the booking page.
Our recommendation
The two-person Cetina kayak rental is the clearest first choice for independent paddlers. Start with a shorter turnaround than the advertised maximum. Save SUP or a sea kayak for a calm day and a route the beach operator explicitly recommends.
